Childhood and adolescence

Avril was born on Velosia, an M-class Federation resort planet with pink skies and a planetary ocean. Her parents operated a charter boat service, offering everything from guided SCUBA tours to deep-sea fishing.

During school breaks, Avril helped out aboard her parents’ boat, the Aurora, learning the family trade. Gallier Tours attracted customers form all over the quadrant, and Avril thoroughly enjoyed listening to tales of distant planets.

By the time she was twelve, Avril had decided to join Starfleet, and began preparing herself for academy entrance. Although she enjoyed exobiology classes, she developed an interest in healthcare through relatives in the field.

Starfleet Academy - Starfleet Medical

Due to her weak mathematics skills, Avril failed her first Academy entrance exam at age seventeen. She spent the following year boning up on the subject, and passed (though just barely) on her second attempt.

Once at the Academy, Avril quickly realized that she didn’t want a full medical degree. She chose Nursing as a quicker route to Active Duty, and found the training quite fulfilling.

During her Academy years, Avril fell in with a group of fellow cadets who shared her enthusiasm for diving. Through her new friends, she eventually dove in all of Earth’s oceans.

In her final year, Avril was briefly engaged to marry fellow cadet Ian Miller. She broke off the engagement after catching him with another man.

After graduation, Avril accepted a posting to the USS Swiftsure as a nurse, in the Outer Perseus Arm of the galaxy.
